ABSTRACT
The prerequisite for a standard social work practice agency for students’ field practicum in the Nigerian social work pedagogy is that it should be staffed by trained social workers who will adequately play the role of field supervisors to guide students on field practicum. However, it appears that this critical aspect of social work pedagogy is being harmed by lack of standard social work practice agencies and skilled agency supervisors. Information for this chapter was obtained largely through key informant interviews with four social work educators and focus group discussions with 20 undergraduate social work students. Participants' lived experiences revealed current realities and challenges with fieldwork placement within the Nigerian social work educational system. A revelatory theme that emerged from the study, however, suggests innovative strategies for a sustainable social work education in Nigeria. We recommend provision of Nigerian-based fieldwork instructional guides and periodic retraining of social work educators.
