ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the experience of leaving a group therapy practice to start a solo private practice, in search of REAL professional freedom. Topics covered include: identifying long-term career goals, learning the business side of being a small business owner, utilizing various networking opportunities to connect, other professionals who may be a valuable support when getting started, the importance of managing business finances, and ways of developing marketing and business influence via social media to fill the practice. It is important to remember that the freedom of entrepreneurship comes at a price, as with more freedom comes more responsibility. The art of juggling the myriad of business-related tasks can be difficult to learn, and at times it can feel like the list is never-ending, therefore, identifying ways to work smarter, not harder is the key. Setting up systems and structures can lead to greater productivity and effectiveness in the business from the start, and this will also be discussed in this chapter.
