ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the unique challenges and ethical considerations faced by kink-identified mental health professionals working in the field of modern psychology. As BDSM practices gain wider acceptance, an increasing number of clinicians integrate their personal experiences into their professional practice to better serve the growing kinky population. Balancing self-disclosure and maintaining professional boundaries, however, can be difficult. This chapter provides guidance on navigating ethical concerns, managing encounters in kink spaces, and marketing oneself as a kink-affirming practitioner while avoiding pitfalls associated with dual relationships and transference/countertransference. Through a risk-aware approach, kinky clinicians can embody their authentic selves and offer specialized support to their clients, while adhering to professional ethics and fostering open dialogue around sexuality and relationship diversity.
