ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the editors interview renowned relationship experts Dr. John M. Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman. They explore the intricate world of infidelity within committed relationships, leveraging their extensive expertise to provide insights into the nature of infidelity and the journey toward healing. As pioneers of Gottman Method Couples Therapy, the Gottmans emphasize the profound breach of trust and commitment that accompanies infidelity. The interview provides an overview of the Gottmans’ innovative Trust Revival Method, which champions the importance of transparency, self-examination, and empathy in overcoming infidelity and rebuilding trust while emphasizing the absence of secrets. Their treatment methodology revolves around validating the emotions of the hurt partner and creating a safe space for their trauma narrative. This approach distinguishes itself from other broad-based couples therapy approaches by prioritizing accountability and transparency from the involved partner, including acknowledging the hurt partner’s pain, before embarking on the path to rebuilding the relationship. Throughout the discussion, the Gottmans stress the significance of empathy, open dialogue, and acceptance of human imperfections. This interview provides valuable guidance to practitioners and scholars seeking to better understand the intricate dynamics of infidelity in romantic relationships.
