ABSTRACT

Despite couples’ attempts to keep relational transgressions separate from their parenting, knowledge of parental infidelity is common. Moreover, the stress associated with parental infidelity often spills over to children (young, adolescent, and adult) and may impact them in numerous ways. In fact, researchers note parental infidelity has a generally negative influence on parent–child relationships, children’s well-being, and individuals’ later life relationship experiences and sexual behaviors.. In this chapter, we highlight the research on parental infidelity by first discussing its prevalence; children’s discovery of parental infidelity; its impact on family communication; and related communicative, relationship, and psychological outcomes. We conclude this chapter by reviewing clinical approaches to help parents and children navigate parental infidelity and provide resources to help clinicians, educators, and students.
