ABSTRACT

The topic of college teachers’ well-being, especially young teachers under the age of 45, has been a widely discussed and acknowledged point of concern in China in recent years due to the growing awareness that teaching is a profession struggling with dissatisfaction, stress, and burnout. This chapter analyzes the current situation of young teachers in Chinese higher education, many of whom are English language teachers, the cause and effect of the current teacher well-being ecosystem, and the possible solution provided by the practice of the Teachers’ Development Center (TDC) at Sichuan International Studies University (SISU) in China. To further elaborate on this topic, the chapter is divided into the following sections: (1) the current situation of young teachers in Chinese higher education, (2) the practice of the TDC at SISU and its outcomes, and (3) enlightenment and the solutions. The information shared in this contribution will shed light on the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities higher education institutions have to support the well-being of young teachers.
