ABSTRACT

During the Covid-19 pandemic, social media emerged as one of the most widely used methods to disseminate information and reach the citizens directly. Users were involved in social media and online activities as they had more time during quarantine. The social media platforms influencers also encouraged their followers to practice social distancing, maintain hygiene, stay at home and observe Covid-appropriate behaviour. But the reliability of information shared on social media platform remains questionable because the source of information may not be authentic. The government of India developed the Aarogya Setu app to provide trustworthy information and safety measures regarding Covid-19 to the citizens. Thus, in tough times like a pandemic, social media plays a significant role in providing authentic and informative information as a driving force for social interaction. This chapter analyzes the importance of social media as a communication tool and trust issues associated with it during the pandemic. Present work describes the key aspects of managing users’ trust using social media strategies and trust management mechanisms. The manuscript also presents solution to generate enhanced trust among the people for social media content during the pandemic.
