ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author discusses the various levels and kinds of education. In doing this, he follows the usual order from primary education upwards; but he discusses teacher education before secondary education. The reason for this is that teachers were being trained in Lesotho before it had any secondary education, and up to quite recently primary school teachers were trained on the completion of their primary education. The order, therefore, will be primary education, teacher education, secondary education, technical and vocational education, higher education and non-formal education. If, therefore, Lesotho’s education has long remained imitative and somewhat irrelevant, it is purposefully giving itself a new character. This was the objective of the ‘dialogue’ held with the people at village level in 1977 and 1978 which led to the national seminar of May 1978.
