ABSTRACT

The history of China’s Communist Party (CCP)’s policy on ethnic groups started with classification and ethnic groups from over 400 to 55 legalised. In this process, 10 million Uyghurs of this unification suffered the most. CCP classifies these as ‘concentrated educational transformation centres’, but evidence suggests that the Uyghurs are subjected to forced indoctrination, psychological stress, forced labour, and torture. In a counter-narrative, it’s possible to tolerate different colours and standards, but CCP has chosen one colour for all ethnic groups in the name of national unity and development. Claudia’s article aims to understand the origins and impact of the CCP policy in Xinjiang, especially on Uyghurs, and decode its narrative at the national level.
