ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the physical and emotional sequelae of female genital mutilation (FGM), thereby highlighting a growing awareness of the issue among academics and professionals such as ob-gyns, psychologists, and psychiatrists. The absence of research from countries with a high incidence of FGM/Cutting (FGM/C), coupled with the absence of community voices, begs the question of who is controlling the FGM/C narrative. The initiative was built on the belief that through education and dialogue, myths surrounding could be dispelled, clinical services to women who had experienced FGM/C improved, and relationships strengthened. Familiar physical spaces where community members felt safe were prioritized over professional or clinical venues. Individual safety and integrity were paramount.
