ABSTRACT

The emergence of new media platforms largely helped the “millennial feminists” to bring about a new kind of conversation on various forms of oppression faced by women in India. Movements such as the “Slut Walk” of 2011 and the “Bekhauf Azadi” of 2017 are examples of such exclusive feminist social media movements in India that had made a huge impact on film, media, and print industries. This activism, popularly known as “social media feminism,” is also termed as the “fourth wave of feminism.” The character of social media feminism in India and their reactive nature with its impact on feminist discourse need to be explored. With this motive, this chapter looks at the impact of the #MeToo movement in India, a popular social media mobilisation across the world that addresses sexual harassment against women. The chapter traces the emergence of the #MeToo India Movement, which is based on access to and use of social media as a platform for change, and its outcomes and stresses the relevance of deliberative democracy in addressing the challenges and concerns raised by the #MeToo movement in India. The chapter understands that the spread of social media platforms in India has helped women share their experiences of violence from the Patriarchy and gain new relevance for their experience.
