ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the use of the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) and Capability Opportunity Motivation – Behaviour (COM-B). TDF is a determinant framework based on a synthesis of 128 theoretical constructs found in 33 behaviour change theories. TDF consists of 14 domains. It can be used in combination with COM-B, which is based on a principle of US criminal law that considers prerequisites for the performance of specified volitional behaviours. COM-B posits that for behaviour change to occur, individuals need to perceive that they are capable of performing the behaviour (Capability), have the opportunity to engage in the behaviour (Opportunity) and want or need to carry out the behaviour (Motivation).
