ABSTRACT

The Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework was developed for use in public health to enable broader evaluations of interventions. The ultimate impact of an intervention is conceptualized as the combined effects of the five dimensions of RE-AIM. These dimensions operate at both the individual level and multiple ecological levels, most frequently at staff and setting levels in health systems although RE-AIM has also been applied at community and national levels. The framework is used not only for evaluation purposes but also for planning implementation endeavours. This chapter looks at the use of RE-AIM, with three case studies providing examples of how the framework can be applied.
