ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the current challenges and opportunities for Urban Indonesia where over 151 million residents live. Urban population has increased and the number of cities has also expanded in the country, with significant changes in land use. In this new millennium, Indonesia has also experienced a politico-administrative change with the decentralisation of decision-making, providing more power and responsibilities to local governments. The need for further and better services and infrastructure has also risen. Urban planning has a critical role to play in how cities are managed and improved to provide a high quality of life to residents and ensure long-term sustainability. The chapter discusses urbanisation in relation to social inclusion, changes in housing and consumption, and further development of community participation. It also describes the challenges of urban sustainability and resilience. Finally, the chapter provides the rationale of the book and outlines the key ideas of the book and 19 selected cities.
