ABSTRACT

Makassar City, like many other large cities in Indonesia, has to take the great pressure of urban expansion from the city centre to accommodate the high population growth and urban activities are not in line with their higher tendency of urban development. As the only metropolitan and the biggest coastal city in the eastern part of Indonesia, this situation has given a significant challenge to the city. For more than two decades, coastal areas locating on the southern part of Makassar have apparently become a centre area for higher tension of urban expansion. It can be seen, for instance, with the development of a new town called Metro Tanjung Bunga (MTB). Although it can be expected to bring a huge contribution to the economic growth in the area, on the process of its development, MTB has created crucial issues related to coastal communities. They have to release their lands and properties that lead to the change of their livelihood assets. This has potentially led to significant consequences on their Quality of Life (QoL). The QoL has a strong capability to capture the level of fulfilment and satisfaction of people’s needs. The ability of people to meet their needs comes from the ownership and the use of livelihood assets which might be threatened easily due to urban development.
