ABSTRACT

This chapter will study the practical expression of moral virtues that were developed during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and their application to banquets as public displays of power. To carry out this work, a large corpus of table manner texts from the indicated period has been selected, both in Latin and in vernacular languages. The aim is to illustrate how the moral precepts of the classics, combined with those provided by Christianity, created the framework for social relations of mediaeval men, granted that the banquet was one of the main spaces of conviviality.
