ABSTRACT

Blockchain, providing higher transparency and facilitating information sharing among educational entities, can be used for the development of different forms of distributed and lifelong learning opportunities in the transformation of higher education towards Education 4.0. Such a transformation accentuates the student-centred learning approach, providing lifelong learners with better control of their learning process and related data. The scope of this chapter is to identify areas in which blockchain can enable the reorientation of the educational and study-oriented processes towards distributed and lifelong learning. Specifically, it embraces the areas related to accessing learning materials, recording grades, and making payments. A promising example is an evolution of universities towards an ecosystem in which blockchain is an infrastructure for students to create their own learning paths.
