ABSTRACT

Blockchain can play a significant role in shaping the future of education, as perceived from various stakeholders’ perspectives, including educational institutions, students, and employers. However, the number of implemented blockchain-based systems, apart from cryptocurrencies, is relatively small. Nevertheless, there are many planned or ongoing attempts to create such systems, as well as first-hand experiences in their implementations. These initiatives tend to deal only with individual aspects of widely understood education, while a more integrated and multi-faceted approach is needed. Therefore, the main purpose of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive overview of the feasibility of supporting Education 4.0 with blockchain. It begins with the identification of the most promising areas of blockchain application in education. Then, analyses the cases of ongoing or successfully ended implementations of blockchain-based solutions, outlining the main problems that occur during their development and deployment. Finally, possibilities of reshaping the Education 4.0 ecosystem using blockchain are critically evaluated.
