ABSTRACT

Although every classroom and every early childhood service is different physically, philosophically, and geographically, this chapter invites the reader to reflect on the seemingly mundane routine of sleep time in early childhood services. Sleep time is a complex space tied up in knots and tangles that tug, push, and pull at, between, and with children, teachers, and families. This chapter explores the operations of power within sleep time and their impact on identities, wellbeing, and relationships. Drawing on Foucauldian understandings of power, knowledge, and truth, this work deconstructs developmental ideologies that frame sleep time routines through discourses of maturation and biological development.
