ABSTRACT

Jokes, blackmail, lies, jealousy, humiliation, intimidation, aggressive caresses, beatings, threats, mutilations, and murder that women face in any country are seldom denounced because women are rarely heard, taken seriously, or accompanied. Data on violence against women and femicides in Mexico shows an increase during the Covid-19 pandemic. This is despite the fact the courts were either closed or were slower in their response than they were before the pandemic. Official numbers are, therefore, conservative. Those of us who work in civil society organisations claim that there are more than ten women killed a day. Living with our aggressors is not easy, especially if culture, TV shows, music, and entertainment reinforce the attitude of subjugation of women. Feminist groups that have emerged recently are the hope for all of us to learn how to support women and give them different types of training because as a slogan says: “[W]hen a woman advances, no man backs up.” This chapter traces issues of violence against women and femicides in Mexico during and prior to the pandemic.
