ABSTRACT

Planning a nutritious diet is a complex task because individuals consume nutrients as part of whole foods within the context of a diet influenced by a range of sociocultural, environmental, and individual factors. This chapter describes how whole foods provide more than nutrients alone and outlines how dietary guidelines can be used to develop foundational diets for athletes. It continues to explore how athletes can meet nutrient requirements through food and presents practical food choices to meet the macro- and micronutrient requirements of athletes.
