ABSTRACT

Dietary intake is well known to help an athlete support their training adaptations with the aim of maximising outcomes for training and competition; however, an athlete’s relationship with food, exercise and their body will impact their dietary intake. Understanding the complex interaction of factors that influence food and fluid selection is vital when working with an athlete to optimise their nutritional intake. This chapter will explore the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence dietary intake and take a deeper dive into key components that impact dietary intake and its relationship with food including disordered eating, eating disorders, low energy availability, and relative energy deficiency in sports.
