ABSTRACT

Dietary assessment tools are used to determine what an athlete or a group of people are eating and drinking and are typically linked to food composition data to determine the nutrient and food composition of a person’s eating pattern. Selecting the correct assessment method can be challenging, as each has its unique advantages and disadvantages. Similarly, a careful section of a food composition database is required when translating a dietary assessment to usable forms of output. For athletes, information attained from a dietary assessment can help to support training demands, optimise exercise performance, and improve recovery. When assessing the food intake of athletes, the type of sport, phase of competition, training history, as well as other lifestyle factors should be considered. This chapter provides an overview of dietary assessment types, existing and emerging methods, and considerations that are relevant to athletes.
