ABSTRACT

Student success is most often measured in terms of grades and graduation, which are centered on what happens in the classroom. However, universities must also recognize the ways in which support services influence students’ academic performance outside of the classroom. Chapter 1 highlights how support services—specifically academic, campus, and professional support—are key to improved student outcomes for international students. We argue, based on the contributions to this volume, that support services that intentionally foster belonging and connection, not acculturation, as part of their mission can have the greatest impact, especially when the services offered by the different offices on campus work in tandem.
