ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the various forces of oppression that contribute to sexual violence against women in Egyptian playwright Nora Amin’s Theatre of Crime (2019). The chapter makes the argument that widespread misogyny and classism foster an environment that leaves women particularly vulnerable and susceptible to sexual violence. Nonetheless, the play also presents theatre as a tool for resisting oppression and subverting the status quo. The dramatic world of Theatre of Crime collapses to allow the audience to undo the oppression they witness. It is inspired by Augusto Boal’s Forum Theatre where the audience is eventually invited to directly take part in the action.
