ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the potential benefits and consequences of engagement in esports. Esports has the potential to be inclusive and develop self-regulatory skills which are not just useful in playing esports but also in other life domains. The chapter also reviews the potential physical and psychosocial health and wellbeing implications of engagement in esports at both the elite and grassroots level. This includes obesity, physical activity behaviour, sleep, and diet behaviours and the potential of esports to be a medium of public health interventions. Finally, the organisational structure at the professional and grassroots level are described, and opportunities for improving performance and health and wellbeing identified.
