ABSTRACT

In a world with a varied supply of goods and services, the elements that signal certain attributes are used as references to inform customers of their characteritics. Eco-labels are intended to indicate that certain goods and services have certain properties that make them accomplish with environmental care requirements. Besides, the fact that the demand values such properties and that the suppliers aim to achieve the required criteria fuel the development of strategies aimed at reaching the established goals. Blue Flags is one of these tools focused on beaches and marinas. Given its expansion in close to 50 countries and its international recognition, it can be considered the most important in this area. This chapter presents a review of what the Blue Flag programme is, the institution that promotes and develops it, the required criteria to obtain it, and some of its impacts and its strategic lines for the future.
