ABSTRACT

This chapter documents the codification of Mizo customary laws from the colonial period to present times. One of the rare cases of written customary laws, the chapter underlies the continuing patriarchal attitudes that have influenced the process of codification of Mizo customary law. The chapter also discusses the efforts of the leading Mizo women’s group to reform the codified system and include minimal rights for women. It highlights the difficulties in advocating for reform of the codified system and the institutionalised repression of women.
