ABSTRACT

This chapter utilizes a gender focus, looking at the roles, responsibilities, problems and priorities of women and men, to understand the extent of the changing roles of women of tribal and other communities engaged in rice farming in Tripura. Food security for Tripura primarily means sustainable production of rice in all farming systems. This requires conservation of the state’s rice germplasm, particularly the traditional high yielding varieties and those having potential for developing into hybrid varieties through vigorous research and development programmes. A preliminary assessment of the impacts of the Perspective Plan of Agriculture was carried out during 2007. Tripura has yet to achieve food security as per its ambitious agricultural perspectives plan. Field studies to understand gender issues in rice farming were done in selected villages and communities in Tripura. The wages of agricultural farm workers differ from place to place and tribe to tribe.
