ABSTRACT

The importance of women’s participation in the labour market and its contribution to the development of a State or a region cannot be overstated. In India, however, with increasing feminisation of the marginalised sections of labour, such participation is not always an improvement for women. India’s northeastern region as a whole has high rates of female workforce participation above the national average, but does this reflect a higher socio-economic status for northeastern women compared to the rest of the country? This chapter explores the nature and extent of female economic activity in northeastern India after economic liberalisation and broadly analyses the patterns of women’s participation in the labour market of this region.
