ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the complex interactions between capitalist and non-capitalist relations of production, exchange and accumulation within and outside agriculture in Arunachal Pradesh and argues that institutional diversity and identity remain key transformative dimensions of the Arunachal economy. Based on evidence generated through multiple rounds of field surveys, it attempts to unpack the ways the specificities of the State have facilitated or constrained accumulation pathways. Linking these specificities to the fundamental transformative processes of capitalist accumulation, the chapter seeks to examine the nature of interactions between capitalist and non-capitalist institutions that have emerged as a critical aspect of the transformation of the local economy.
