ABSTRACT
In view of the myriad problems that attend standard ways of thinking about and interacting with animals, this chapter takes up the task of articulating alternative, pro-animal approaches. Three approaches common in the animal studies literature are examined, namely those that focus on human-animal sameness, otherness, and indistinction. Each approach is explained and then critically examined in view of its practical implications and respective strengths and weaknesses.
