ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the spiritual values that underlie three U.S. farmed animal sanctuaries and reflects on how the sanctuary directors are motivated by their deep connection with and empathy for farmed animals. The kinship they feel with abused, neglected, and traumatized animals leads them to provide a place where animals feel safe—no matter the sacrifice of comfort and convenience to the human sanctuary staff and volunteers. Images by award-winning photographer Isha Leshko illustrate the profound difference made in the animals’ lives as they settle into sanctuaries where they are free from trauma and violence, and where they are nurtured, respected, and loved. In turn, the sanctuary directors experience the gratification of knowing they are living out their calling to make the world a kinder place—a calling that originates in their own deepest spiritual values.
