ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the EU Russia relationship in the post-Ukraine conflict context. It starts with a review of some recent and prominent literature on EU Russia relations, which highlights current trends and gaps in research. The chapter shows the decisive impact of the Ukraine conflict on the relationship, as well as the role that both the EU and its Member States have played in its main developments. Some authors argued that EU Russia relations were characterized by a conflict/cooperation dichotomy since the end of the Cold War, which largely persisted after the 2014 Ukraine crisis. In recent years, several excellent edited collections analyzing EU Russia relations prior to the 2022 crisis have been published. Even fewer analyzed EU Russia relations against the broader context of growing geopolitical competition, particularly between the United States and China, and Russia's assertiveness in the global arena beyond the Ukrainian context.
