ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief historical overview of transatlantic relations to highlight the most important moments of their evolution to present times. During the post-Cold War era, transatlantic relations went through many ups and downs, the latter being mostly related to trade disputes and issues concerning international security. Despite the above-mentioned ups and downs in transatlantic relations over the years, the transatlantic partnership proved to be resilient to all forms of crisis. The crisis of meaning and trust in transatlantic relations during Trump's presidency is clearly reflected in the way Trump addressed the two cornerstones of this relationship, namely transatlantic security and trade. Eager to work with a new Atlanticist president and to rebuild the transatlantic relationship, European leaders expressed in their congratulatory messages to the new President high expectations and wishful thinking that transatlantic relations could be reset and started over there where they were left before Trump.
