ABSTRACT

This chapter will argue that there is an intrinsic connection between Disney's fairy tale narratives and the American Dream. Throughout their history, Disney's fairy tales have been reconstructed and renegotiated alongside and in response to significant political and cultural upheavals in American society, including the Second World War, Reaganism, 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the presidency of Donald Trump. In all its fairy tales of the 20th and 21t centuries, the Walt Disney Studios works to sell its audiences the national myth of the United States at any one given historical moment, constructing a vision of America as the site of an eternally possible happily ever after.
