ABSTRACT

In 2005, Steve Wilson followed the Woodburn (OR) Bulldogs through their fall soccer season, attending games and practices, interviewing the players, coaches, school administrators, and parents. He reported the experience in his book, The Boys from Little Mexico: A Season Chasing the American Dream (Beacon 2010). Wilson's account told the stories of many boys who were first-generation immigrants from Mexico, several of them undocumented, and described the challenges they faced in succeeding academically, socially, and financially in the United States. Beginning in 2021, Wilson re-interviewed a number of the players, coaches, school administrators, and parents he first met and spoke with in 2005. He did so to examine the experiences of the young men he earlier chronicled; to listen to the views of those who knew them; and to document the young immigrants’ current place in the American Dream.
