ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic represents a major shock for economies and societies. The impact of the pandemic on skills demand has been a major topic for scholars around the world. According to some evidence, there has been a reallocation of labour from the most affected industries such as retail or hospitality to other sectors, such as healthcare or the information and communication technology sector, where productivity is generally higher and workers are likely to pick up highly-valued, marketable skills. The chapter explains the generalisability and reliability issues of the data used is presented with references to the relevant literature. A large body of literature is concerned with the representativeness of online job vacancies as a data source. The chapter presents some evidence that the pandemic, or more precisely mobility restrictions enacted because of the pandemic, has resulted in the increase in demand for intermediate digital skills in the Slovak labour market.
