ABSTRACT

Multimedia installation art has become a privileged playground for contemporary art of sacred inspiration. Living artists who share an interest in visual creativity of a religious nature, however obscurely defined, have been for some decades turning to these media. While Bill Viola immediately comes to mind, his case is by no means unique. Many others already show a relevant body of work that explores the interaction between video art and Christianism. The divine connotations of light are the most frequent feature in this trend, together with practices in dematerialization, color, reappropriation, and projection. This chapter provides an overview of the phenomenon and identifies some of its potential developments.
