ABSTRACT

The California Light & Space Movement is frequently construed as a way that Los Angeles individuated from the dominant art culture of New York. This essay, however, brings non-American cities into the conversation, each of which is reflected in the material culture of Los Angeles. Drawing on the light mysticism of Constantinople, Thessaloniki, and Paris, Phillip K. Smith III’s Los Angeles show at Bridge Projects (10 Columns, 2019) is cast in a more global, even theological, light.
