ABSTRACT

This chapter argues against the generally held view that Indian Nepalis have nothing to do with Nepal, as brilliantly articulated by Michael Hutt; instead, it argues that they constitute a diaspora. After a brief introduction to who “Indian Nepalis” are, it moves on to examine the criteria of diasporic people, as provided by three leading scholars in the field, namely William Safran, Robin Cohen, and James Clifford, to drive the point home that Indian Nepalis constitute a diasporic society, much as the Nepalese Indians do in Nepal’s terai and urban centres.
