ABSTRACT

This chapter examines several psychosocial aspects involved in the intercultural relations of Indian migrants living in Portugal. Two basic domains of intercultural relations are acculturation and adaptation. Regarding acculturation, we reviewed research on acculturation strategies and perceived discrimination. Concerning psychological adaptation, we reviewed research on satisfaction with life, happiness, and self-esteem. Finally, regarding socio-cultural adaptation, we reviewed research on behavioural problems and intimate relationships. The set of reviewed research on Indian youths and adults living in Portugal is consistent with the assumption that most migrants adapt well to new cultural contexts, notwithstanding the challenges they may encounter in response to cultural changes and to living at the confluence of cultures.
