ABSTRACT

Migrant writing in the United Kingdom has been mainly studied in relation to English language books, poems and short stories. This chapter will introduce migrant writing in vernacular languages, by articulating the infrastructure that enabled this writing to flourish and also by offering examples from two Punjabi language authors. This voice of the migrant experience from authors, who themselves undertook the journey offers a valuable insight into early migration to Britain. The period under consideration is from the 1960s to 1990s which was the heyday of vernacular writing in South Asian languages.
