ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the applied arts, sometimes ‘dismissed as purely decorative’. It proposes a re-evaluation of Dutch terracotta from the Bergen op Zoom region by looking into its particular technical aspects. Terracotta (glazed and non-glazed) from the city of Bergen op Zoom was used for the production of a wide range of pottery and kitchen utensils. The combined assortment ranged from jugs to albarelli and from pans to braziers. This Netherlandish pottery was renowned in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries for its high quality. Through a close examination of selected examples, the chapter seeks to contribute to the understanding of the close link between stylistic developments and material qualities.
