ABSTRACT

The erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir has currently three administrative divisions, viz., Jammu, Kashmir and Leh. Jammu division is comprised of ten districts, which include Jammu, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar. Except Jammu, Samba and, to some extent, Kathua districts, most of the terrain of Jammu division is mountainous and includes the Pir Panjal Range, which separates it from Kashmir Valley. Chenab River is the principal river of the Jammu division. Jammu city, also known as the city of temples, is the largest city in Jammu division and is the winter capital of the state. Major religion of Jammu division is Hinduism (62%) and Islam (36%). The Pir Panjal Range, the Trikuta Hills and the low-lying Tawi River basin add diversity to the terrain of Jammu division.
