ABSTRACT

Health conditions in urban areas are the reflection of the availability of not only the medical facilities but also the sanitation, transport network, levels of pollution, housing conditions, overcrowding, recreational facilities. This chapter is aimed at the assessment of residents’ perception concerning health hazards, which affects the health of the people in different areas. The levels of perception and its impact on people’s behaviour vary over time and space. This variation is no doubt related to the socio-cultural and economic background, and the geography of the particular areas. Three localities in Srinagar urban area have been selected in order to study how the residents perceive the health hazards of their locality, identify the variation in their perception if any, and identify what particular health hazard most or least concerned the residuals. It is hoped that such studies based on local field studies may contribute significantly to urban health planning.
