ABSTRACT

Teleworking is a fast-growing work modality worldwide. Although it started decades ago, the Covid pandemic and forced confinements led to explosive expansion. Research about impacts and effects is limited while need for studies piles up. This chapter addresses telework and the emergence of distance and hybrid work arrangements from risk factors in the psychosocial dimension. It identifies the most critical risks and challenges in the workplace and teleworking overload that stand out in need for solutions. The discussion covers characteristics of teleworking overload, online fatigue and permanent online connectivity and provides suggestions to improve institutional and public policies aiming to diminish risks associated with emerging distance / hybrid work structures. Solutions explore the importance of resilience and agility, 2 fundamental Human Centered Management dimensions and the skills needed to support organizations optimize benefits and minimize costs of disruptions and the unprecedented transformation from traditional physical office to new and highly volatile work structures subject to intensive use of distance technologies reshaping the workplace.
