ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors discuss the impact that aphasia has on conversation behaviors. A historical overview of the evolving field of aphasia therapy is outlined and examined in light of why conversation treatment is a growing and important area of rehabilitation in aphasia. From the three main delivery models of conversation treatment in aphasia, namely, communication partner training, group therapy, and individual therapy, the latter is the focus of this chapter. The authors present data from four one-on-one conversation treatments that focus directly on the person with aphasia: 1) Facilitating Authentic Conversation (FAC), 2) Savage et al.'s Conversational Treatment, 3) Natural Conversation for Severe Aphasia, and 4) Expanding Communication and Language Opportunities Generated in Conversation (ECoLoGiC-Tx). Lastly, the application of principles for conversation treatment with bilingual/multilingual populations are considered.
