ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces translanguaging as an effective theory to transform language practices in the work of clinicians in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) with multilingual populations. We delve into the ideological- and value-based principles that shape the traditional clinical practice in SLHS and the need to dismantle the national and raciolinguistic ideologies of the monolingual-norm-biased framework underlying assessment practices in SLHS. Translanguaging-based practice is promoted as an alternative toward the provision of inclusive, ecologically appropriate care for multilingual individuals from a holistically, functionally, strength-based perspective. General strategies for shifting to translanguage-based assessment are suggested for practical implementation.
