ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to develop advanced skills required of social workers employed in the mental health field. It provides an historical context for practice and outlines how changes to mental health services impact service delivery. It describes some current mental health service systems both in Australia and internationally. The social work role in mental health is thoroughly explored, detailing specific tasks performed. For social work students considering a future in clinical mental health, strategies for surviving and thriving are discussed in the context of enhancing social work practice more broadly.
